Security

Security is a primary concern of Student Housing Services and the UH Manoa system in general. Specially trained Campus Security Officers routinely patrol housing areas and are always willing and able to provide assistance. Campus Security also offers the following services:

Call Boxes

Located throughout the Manoa campus for emergency communication are emergency call boxes. These phones can be distinguished by their red box and blue light. Emergency call boxes connect callers with Campus Security 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call boxes are activated simply by lifting the handset from the cradle. They automatically connect with Campus Security and identify the location of the box. In the event of an emergency, do not hesitate to use these phones, and remain near the call box for Campus Security Officers to respond.

Security Escorts

Campus Security will provide a point to point escort on campus during darkness hours for any individual who is faced with no other alternative but to walk alone to get to their destination. You may request this service by either calling the Campus Security dispatcher at 956-8211, or by using any of the Emergency call boxes. Please keep in mind that this is a service provided for your protection and is not intended to be basic transportation. Student Housing encourages people to use the "buddy" system and to car pool whenever possible.

Security Tips For Residence Hall Living

Each Residence Hall is equipped with special hardware to enhance the safety and security of all legitimate residents. Hall Staff are also specially trained in both proactive and reactive measures to deal with possible security breaches. However, the best security is provided by the residents themselves. Here are some tips:

  • A large number of thefts from unlocked residence hall rooms occur while the residents of the room are on the same floor, but have just stepped out for one minute. It takes approximately eight seconds for someone to walk into an unattended room and remove something, such as a wallet or jewelry. Residents should lock their door even when only going to the bathroom or to the room next door.

  • Lock the door when in the room, especially when asleep.
  • Try to take showers only when there are other residents on the floor.
  • Never leave handbags, billfolds, jewelry, or other valuables unattended in rooms, showers, or lounges. Put them away in a safe place under lock and key if possible.
  • Strangers loitering in or around residence halls should be reported to the hall staff immediately.
  • Do not prop open front doors that should be closed and locked.
  • Do not leave small items of value in the room during vacations and long holidays.
  • Residents receiving annoying or obscene phone calls should notify Campus Security at x66911, or hall staff at once. It may be a prank, but you never know.
  • Never let strangers into the building or "key them up" the elevators.

All crimes should be reported to the hall staff AND Campus Security as soon as possible!
