ResNet Requirements and Responsibilities
As a part of your rental agreement, Student Housing Services provides each resident with a
single working High-Speed Internet port from their dorm or apartment.
All residents are required to provide the following items:
- A computer with a network interface card (NIC) with necessary
disks or CDs.
- An ethernet network cable (category 5 or higher) with male RJ-45 connectors
on each end. ResNet does not provide network cables.
- All software disks and CDs that came with your computer, especially Operating
System or recovery CDs.
- Recommended: A good surge protector with protection for a 10/100Base-T connector (RJ45) or a combination surge protector/battery backup, also with 10/100Base-T protection.
- Optional: Residents may also want to bring peripherals such as scanners,
printers, or digital cameras. Anti-virus software can be downloaded from
University of Hawaii ITS (Information and Technology Services). Previous antivirus software must be removed before installing the anti-virus program provided by University of Hawaii ITS (Information and Technology Services). A UH user
name and password is required to download. http://www.hawaii.edu/antivirus
All residents are responsible for the following duties:
- Backing up own files to CD, USB flash (memory) drives, floppy diskettes,
or an external hard-drive.
- Creating passwords for all administrative accounts (Mac OSX, Windows 2000
and Windows XP).
- Making sure that the computer's operating system is updated and patched.
- Having an anti-virus software installed which is capable of being updated
automatically. University of Hawaii, ITS (Information and Technology Services)
provides all
UH students with antivirus software.

- Making sure to protect against spyware and/or malware by using software
such as Lavasoft's Adaware.
- Updating the operating system, antivirus, and spyware/malware software on
a regular basis.
- Review the ResNet
Windows XP Security Advisory for more Windows XP information.
Technical Details
- We recommend a Macintosh computer with OS X or better
or an IBM PC compatible running Microsoft Windows XP or higher. The computer
should
have a functional ethernet port.
No other operating systems are supported by the ResNet staff.
- The computer must have a 10/100Base-T (RJ45) ethernet
port.
Almost all new computers come with a 10/100Base-T (RJ45) ethernet port. Older computers may require a Network Interface Card. Please note that some laptop PCMCIA or PC Card network cards require an
RJ45 dongle. If
your card only has a cable terminating with an RJ45 connector, you will
need a coupler.
DataJacks are wired for standard 10/100Base-T and should work with ethernet
(network) cables provided by the network interface card's manufacturer or
at most computer stores. Ethernet cables should be labeled Category 5
(e.g. Cat 5, Cat 5e) or better.
- ResNet does not provide ethernet cables.
- Software drivers and manuals
Residents should bring software drivers and manuals that came with the network interface card as well as
those that came with the computer.
