Welcome

Dear fellow UH Manoa Parent,

The days are numbered and soon your son or daughter will head off to college. I am certain you are counting the days with both anticipation and sadness, as I am. As parents, we are also experiencing a range of emotions as we send them off to college. We want our student to be strong and confident and at the same time, we want to protect them and ensure that all the best opportunities are available to them.

Since they are now off on their own, we as parents need to release them to begin to find their own way. I feel that the main message to our student is to tell them we believe in them, that we know they can do it and that it is OK to struggle. In the end, they will learn that life has its struggles, but they are strong enough to meet the challenges ahead.

Because you as parents have always played such a critical role in their lives, we invite you to join us in this process. There are a number of ways in which you can stay connected to the UH Manoa campus. We encourage you to attend the complimentary dinner for First Year Parents on Thursday, 8/16/07 at the Hale Aloha cafeteria. This is a great way to get a feel for the campus atmosphere your student will soon be experiencing. We will be there to greet and welcome you. In addition, the new UHM Chancellor and Housing Director, as well as the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, will be present to greet you.

Our UHM parent handbook can be downloaded on the computer. We hope the information in the booklet will be helpful .Please take a few minutes to review the valuable information in this booklet. If you have any questions about parent involvement or any questions in general, please do not hesitate to call us. I am excited about the many upcoming opportunities this year in which we may be able to enhance the college experience for our students.

We look forward to seeing you at Orientation on Thursday, August 16, 2007. Please come up and say hello. We welcome any input or volunteers to join us, especially the Oahu parents.
