Assessing Your Needs and Budgeting

ASSESSING YOUR NEEDS AND BUDGETING
Before you begin to look for a place to rent off-campus, you will need to decide how much rent you are able to afford. Depending upon your income, it is recommended that you allot 1/3 to 1/2 of your gross income for housing. If you are fortunate to be financially dependent on your parents or whomever, you will need to consult with them as to how much they are willing to help with expenses.

You should also consider the following and allow for these items to be included in your budget

  • Utility bills.
  • Food and meal expenses.
  • Extracurricular activites.
  • Entertainment and personal necessities.
  • Furniture and appliances.

You will also need some additional cash reserves for the following expenses before embarking on your "hunt" for a place of your own:

    1. DEPOSIT - which is usually equal to, and not greater than, one month's rent

    2. APPLICATION FEE - some landlords may ask for anywhere from $10 to $25.

    3. FIRST MONTH'S RENT - required before you take possession of the unit.

    4. UTILITY DEPOSITS - if you must pay your own utilities, you will be required to provide deposits to the utility companies which will service your residence.
