The Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed a case of the H1N1 influenza in a resident of the Wainani housing complex.
This virus is highly contagious. However, up to this date, it has been a relatively mild clinical disease, and no more dangerous than the usual seasonal flu. The student involved in the confirmed case is already well on the way to recovery and housing is taking the necessary precautions with this student to reduce contact with others. There have been no other cases reported in any other campus housing communities.
If you should develop symptom of the flu such as fever, chills, sore throat, cough, bodyaches and headaches, please see your physician or the University Health Services.
Nasal/throat swab samples will be taken and submitted for testing for the H1N1 flu. During the 48-72 hours before the results are known, please practice “social isolation” by confining yourself to your living quarters. If you’re sick, wear a mask if you need to leave your room or apartment. Do not attend any public functions. Masks will be available at community front desks.
The Housing Office is prepared to provide rooms for isolation when necessary. If isolation is necessary, housing staff will provide assistance with your needs (food, etc.). The Housing Office and the Health Service are working closely with the Department of Health for additional advice and prevention steps.
In order to prevent or limit the spread of infection, take the following precautions:
